Good Morning!
Hopefully you’ve had a good night’s sleep and are feeling refreshed.
Today we’ll explore two of our favorite neighborhoods:
- Shibamata
- Asakusa
Both offer a wonderful introduction to traditional Tokyo.
Start at Sandurian Bakery

One of our favorite local bakeries, Sandurian, opens early.
Fresh bread makes the perfect start before the day’s sightseeing.
(Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.)
FamilyMart Coffee

On your way back, stop by FamilyMart.
Japanese convenience store coffee is surprisingly good—and affordable.
Grab a coffee and enjoy breakfast back at our house before heading out.
Morning: Explore Shibamata

Just two minutes away by train is one of Tokyo’s most charming neighborhoods.
Spend time:
- strolling Taishakuten Sando
- browsing the traditional shops
- watching locals go about their day
Unlike many of Tokyo’s major attractions, Shibamata still feels wonderfully relaxed.
Stop by the Retro Candy Store

Kids—and adults—love exploring the shelves of nostalgic Japanese sweets at Shibamata Haikara Yokocho.
It’s also a fun place to pick up inexpensive souvenirs.
Takagiya Roho

Before continuing, grab some freshly made dango from Takagiya Roho.
It’s the perfect snack to enjoy as you walk through the neighborhood.
Shibamata Taishakuten

Don’t just admire the temple from outside.
Purchase a garden ticket to experience:
- beautiful Japanese garden
- the famous carved wooden panels
- peaceful walking paths
This is one of my favorite places to slow down and appreciate traditional craftsmanship.
Lunch at Sepia

For lunch, head to the charming retro café Sepia.
If it’s available, I highly recommend trying one of their colorful Blue Seal ice cream floats.
Cash only.
Afternoon: Head to Asakusa

Now that the morning crowds have thinned, it’s a great time to visit Senso-ji and Nakamise Shopping Street.
The atmosphere is much more relaxed than first thing in the morning.
Take your time exploring.
Dinner

For dinner, explore:
- Shin Nakamise Shopping Street
- Ekimise at Tobu Asakusa Station
Both offer plenty of dining options.
Evening Walk

If you’re not quite ready to head home, finish your day with a peaceful walk along the Sumida River.
The illuminated Tokyo Skytree in the distance makes for a beautiful ending to your first full day.
Want to spend more time in Shibamata?
We barely scratched the surface in today’s itinerary. From hidden temples and riverside walks to local museums and seasonal events, our complete Shibamata guide will help you discover why it’s one of Tokyo’s most underrated neighborhoods.
