What is Ukiyo-e?

Ukiyo-e (浮世絵), meaning “pictures of the floating world,” is a genre of Japanese art from the Edo period (1603–1868). This iconic art form captured the beauty of fleeting moments through woodblock prints and paintings. Among the themes are landscapes, daily life, kabuki actors, and nature.

At the heart of ukiyo-e stands Katsushika Hokusai, one of Japan’s most celebrated artists. Hokusai’s works transcend time, captivating viewers with their intricate details, vivid colors, and masterful depictions of Japan’s natural beauty. His most famous series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, remains a cornerstone of global art history.
